Spring | Easter Pictures

A few weeks ago, Sydney spent the weekend with her aunt and uncle, so Jon and I had the weekend to ourselves. It was so nice to be able to enjoy the simple things like going out to eat and actually relaxing and taking our time, not having to worry about a fussy, bored toddler!

Anyway, we drove around the country, stopped at some parks, and then we hit up a little antique shop, where I scored a doll bed, a mirror frame, and two small chairs, all for under $60! Most of these items are going to serve double-duty as photo props and toys for the girls. (Girls! There's going to be two of them soon! Still getting used to that idea!)

I had been trying to think of ideas for Sydney's Spring/Easter pictures and when I saw these chairs it all started coming together. Tulips scream Spring to me and I already knew that I wanted to use them somehow, now with the chairs, all I needed was a few cans of spray paint!

We haven't painted the second chair yellow yet and the blue one hasn't been sealed, since I'm trying to keep my paint exposure to a minimum until the baby is born, but we got enough done for the pictures anyway. (Don't worry I just did the primer since it was orderless, Jon helped me with the blue paint, and both steps were done outside where it's nice and ventilated!)

I am so happy with how these pictures turned out! I don't order prints nearly as often as I should in this digital age, but I think I'm going to have to this time! Sorry, I couldn't narrow it down to one or two favorites, so this is a bit of picture overload.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention...that beautiful, clean background...I finally got my seamless paper backdrop stand and I LOVE it! So much easier than editing out wrinkly sheets! Now I just need a roll in every color. :)

Also, a little housekeeping item. I've been trying to improve navigation on my blog, so you might have noticed that I added a few new page tabs at the top (including a new about page) and some category links over on the right hand side. Check them out if you want! I'll be adding more as I have the need/time.

Happy Monday to you all!

Bumpdate: Week 38

Week 38 according to thebump.com:

How big is baby?:

Your baby's the size of a pumpkin! She is about 18.9 to 20.9 inches long and weighs about 6.2 to 9.2 pounds. Her head is now about the same circumference as her abdomen.

Your baby at 38 weeks:

She has a firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test when you hold her hand for the first time! Her organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb. She may have about an inch or so of hair already. She’s slowly shedding that white goo on her skin (called vernix caseosa) but you might see some of it at birth.

For many women, the next couple of weeks are a waiting game. Use this time to prepare your baby's nursery or to take care of necessary tasks you may not get around to for a while after your baby's born. Take naps, catch up on your reading, and spend uninterrupted time with your partner while you can.

38 weeks according to me:

Symptoms: Lots of pains from the baby moving around and hitting nerves in my pelvis, cramps, heartburn, and of course given all of the previous symptoms, difficulty sleeping. I’ve also noticed that my feet and ankles are a little bit swollen lately.

Maternity clothes?: Yes, of course.

Sleep?: Not so great.

Movement?: Yes, still plenty!

Food cravings?: None in particular.

Food aversions?: Nope.

What’s different this time?: Not much that I haven't already mentioned.

Labor signs?: No.

I am loving: Unseasonably warm weather.

What I miss: Being able play with Sydney a little bit easier. Running around, laying on the floor, etc.

What I’m looking forward to: Meeting our little girl. I'm just playing the waiting game now!

What I’m freaking out about: Just getting a little anxious about labor and Delivery. Hoping the logistics of getting someone to watch Sydney, the dog, getting packed up, to the hospital, etc., all work out if I go into labor on my own this time. I was having a lot of painful cramps last night and thought for a moment, "I wonder if I'm starting to go into labor?" I eventually fell asleep, so obviously it wasn't. LOL! I hope I know when it's the real deal!

Project 52 - Week 12: Hunger

It's that time of year! Look what's stocked up in my freezer!

P.S. - So I've totally bombed with this whole P52 thing and missed the past four photo challenges. Trying to get back on the bandwagon now and stick with it the rest of the year!

New Friends

Sydney went on a worm hunt yesterday. Best idea ever!

She played with her "new friends" all night. The bigger night crawlers creeped her out a little, but she had no problem handling the little guys. I don't know if I would describe worms as "cute", but every time she picked one up it was, "awww's tute!"

We tried to explain to her at the end of the night that we had to dump the worms back into the garden so they could go to bed and not get sick, but she wasn't having it. There was one little friend in particular that she didn't want to give up, "No, dis Sydney's!" It was quite a dramatic meltdown. I'm sure I know what we'll be doing this evening.

You may also have noticed that we covered up 3/4 of our garden this year. With baby number two due in a few weeks, I just know that I'm not going to be able to keep up on weeds and maintenance this year, so we decided to cull it down to a more manageable size.

Can you believe how green everything is?! Our trees our budding, the flowers are up, and Jon mowed the lawn yesterday. To quote the tweens...that's cray, cray!

Bumpdate: Week 36

Week 36 according to thebump.com:

How big is baby?:

Your baby's the size of a coconut! She's still in the 17.2- to 18.7-inch and 4.2- to 5.8-pound range and continues to beef up.

Your baby at 36 weeks:

Your due date is just four weeks away. Hasn’t time flown? Your once-poppy seed would probably be able to breathe on her own if she was born right now. (If not, she’d probably need some TLC, but she’d likely be okay.) Most of her systems are in working order at 36 weeks.

She's getting closer and closer to being able to breathe on her own. Her skin is getting smooth and soft and her gums are rigid. Her liver and kidneys are in working order. Circulation and immune systems are basically good to go, too.

She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected her skin during her nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, will form the contents of her first bowel movement.

At the end of this week, your baby will be considered full-term. (Full-term is 37 to 42 weeks; babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 are post-term.) Since baby really could decide to make his arrival any day now, try to put in a little prep work. For example, if you took a child birth class a few months ago, you might want to reread any materials you were given and practice some of the breathing techniques you learned with your partner. Go over your plan for getting to the hospital, and all the what-ifs (like, if you go into labor while you’re at work, will you go home first or straight there?). You might also want to remind your boss and colleagues of the status of all your work projects, so they know exactly where to take over if you’re suddenly out of the office. Week 36 is also a good time to enjoy a date with your partner. We’re guessing you won’t be up for dancing, but a nice dinner might be just what you two could use.

Week 36 according to me:

Symptoms: Heartburn, sore back and sore hips. Walking around is getting more and more uncomfortable, as is siting, lying down, and standing…basically everything. I’ve been feeling a tiny bit nauseous the past few days, but there has been a lot of sickness going around so that may not be pregnancy related. I’ve still been having some pretty painful cramps on a daily basis, but nothing consistent or indicative of labor.

Maternity clothes?: Yes, of course.

Sleep?: Not so great, but not so bad either.

Movement?: Yes, lots and lots. I feel like she is trying to break out of my stomach all vampire baby/alien style…it hurts!

Food cravings?: None in particular.

Food aversions?: Nope.

What’s different this time?: Baby is measuring a little on the light side, 38th percentile, but nothing to be concerned about. Last time I oddly became allergic to my platinum wedding rings (I would get a nasty, itchy rash on my finger within minutes of putting them on). Hopefully I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch, but so far, it hasn’t been an issue this time around!

Labor signs?: No.

I am loving: Enjoying our last few weeks as a family of three, the warm weather, and longer daylight hours.

What I miss: Taking the dog for a walk, running, biking, hiking, etc. Basically, as weather is getting warmer I’m finding myself wanting to be outdoors and active more and more. Sydney and I played outside after work the other night and even trying to do simple things like follow her around the yard and sit in the driveway coloring with chalk, were not exactly comfortable or easy.

What I’m looking forward to: Daylight savings time! Hopefully going into labor without being induced this time. I’m not against being induced again, especially if everything goes as smoothly as it did last time, I just think it would be neat (not sure if that’s the right word) to experience the onset of labor naturally this time.

What I’m freaking out about: Nothing really at this point. Just anxiously waiting and hoping for an easy, uncomplicated delivery.

Photography fun at 35 weeks.

Last week, my long awaited, shiny new tripod arrived at my door! Like a kid on Christmas morning, I couldn't wait to unpack and behold it's beauty, so I decided to play around and do some maternity-type shots.

In the end, I found that I have a LOT to learn about shooting with a tripod and remote shutter release. I have two consistent (and obvious) problems in the photos below. First, the big one, nailing focus. The focus in these shots are horrible. It continuously fell on an object behind me, like the fence in the first set, or the trees in the second. I need to play with my focal point settings, and figure out what's best when I can't manually set the focal point, but I haven't had the time to do it yet. The second problem is hiding the remote. See my hand up in the tree?  I thought it was hidden. Smooth Sarah, real smooth. I could have cloned my hand out but, for these purposes, I didn't really think it was worth the effort.  The same issue exists in all of the photos. How do you inconspicuously point and shoot the remote?

This last set is probably the best in my opinion. The focus is finally on  for one thing (thanks to a rake stand in) and I did a better, but not great, job at hiding the remote.

The good news is that when I'm actually behind the camera shooting someone other than myself, which is what I'm doing most of the time, neither of these issues are a problem. I'll just have to play around and do some trial and error with the tripod/remote setup.

Since I'm on the photography topic...check out my most recent project...fake hardwood floors! I've been getting ready to do some newborn shots when our baby arrives (and hopefully other babies too!) so I decided to see how this works. There are, of course, much nicer, more portable solutions on the market, but they are expensive. For around $50, we were able to get a few thick pieces of plywood, some sealant, some laminate, and VOILA! Hardwood floors. (The 4x6' board is actually cut in half so it breaks down to, two 4x3' sections....which are still very heavy, but at least manageable!)

Not the perfect solution, but it should work well for the time being. Now all I need is a real baby instead of a doll!
